What is a Caregiver?

A person who is at least 21 years of age, registered with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC), contains a valid MMCC caregiver ID card and able to buy and transport medical cannabis from a licensed Maryland dispensaries on behalf of his/her designated patient.

Who can have a Caregiver?

Patients of age 17 or younger has to have a registered caregiver that is their parent or legal guardian. Patients that are 18 years or older can choose to have any MMCC registered caregiver.

How do Caregivers Benefit Patients?

Caregivers help patients by being the person to physically drive to a licensed Maryland medical cannabis dispensary and purchase medical marijuana that they will then deliver to their patients. Many medical marijuana patients suffering from illnesses that make it hard for them to move around let alone drive to a dispensary. Caregivers help patients stay within their comforts while still being able to access the benefits of medical marijuana.

Who is eligible be a Caregiver?

Requirements to become a caregiver for adult patients of 18 years of age or older

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Registered and received approval from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission
  • Purchased an ID card from MMCC for $50

Requirements to become a caregiver for minor patients of 17 years of age or younger

  • At least 21 years of age and be a parent or legal guardian of the minor patient
  • Registered and received approval from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission
  • Purchased an ID card from MMCC for $50
    • Minor Patients are REQUIRED to have at least one caregiver at all times
    • A minor patient’s caregiver must register with the Commission prior to registering the minor patient.

How to register as a Caregiver:

Note:

  • Email address must be accessible and active.
  • Electronic forms can be either a PDF or image file (.pdf, .jpg, .png or .gif)
  • Your government-issued photo ID and proof of Maryland address, if needed, must be uploaded as one file.
  • An electronic copy of a clear and recent photo in the same style as a driver’s license or passport.

Maryland Residents

Acceptable forms of identification:

  • Driver’s license or Motor Vehicle Administration identification card (both front and back)
  • Military ID
  • Passport

If the identification you provide is not a Maryland driver’s license or MVA ID card, then you must also provide proof of a Maryland address.

Acceptable forms of proof:

  • MVA change of address card
  • Utility bill
  • Rental contract
  • Property tax bill
  • Bank statement
  • Official federal or state document
  • Official documentation from Registrar documenting current enrollment and on-campus living status

Non-Maryland Residents

Acceptable forms of identification:

  • Driver’s license or Motor Vehicle Administration identification card (both front and back)
  • Military ID
  • Passport

If providing government identification that does not list an address, then you must also provide proof of your current address.

Acceptable forms of proof of address:

  • Utility bill
  • Rental contract
  • Property tax bill
  • Bank statement
  • Official federal or state document

A non-Maryland resident is required provide the address of and a contact name for the Maryland medical facility where your patient is receiving treatment.

Once you have gathered all documents and information:

  1. Submit an online application by going to the MMCC Registry website and select Create Account under the Caregivers category.
  2. Verify your email, once the application is submitted a verification email will be sent to the email you provided, your email must be verified for MMCC to review application.
  3. Once MMCC reviews application you will be emailed a notification of whether you have been approved or not. Approval email will have your username to be able to log in to Caregiver Registry, along with your MMCC Caregiver ID Number.

Upon Approval by The MMCC:

  1. Login to the Caregiver Registry to access your account and designate your registered patient (max of five registered patients at one time)
  2. Once you have finished all the steps above and at least one of your patients has received a valid certification from a physician registered with MMCC, you can purchase the required ID card for $50 in your Caregiver Registry account.

Now you are ready to head over to a licensed Maryland dispensary and purchase medical marijuana for your patients. You will be required to present your MMCC-issued Caregiver ID card and your valid US government-issued photo ID in order to make any purchase from a licensed Maryland dispensary. The dispensary will also need the patient’s MMCC-issued Patient ID Number for the transaction.
